Etienne, thanks so much for your feedback! In more reading/research that I've come across, I think a big reason has to do with impact! We severely underestimate the challenge of running, and the force of impact from each strike takes much more energy in the body then circling your foot in a pedal! Once I read that, I felt like it made sense!

Good luck in your cycling career!!!
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('569','Adam Ainbinder','Etienne, thanks so much for your feedback!
Hi, found your blog by googling around as I was asking myself the same questions.

My theory is that it is harder to keep a high heart rate on the bike simply because less muscles are involved. Which is essentially what Pete said. To convince yourself, imagine doing bicep curls below AT. How high do you think your heart rate (HR) would then be? If you tried to increase your HR by increasing the load, you'd soon reach muscle failure. It is logical that the same thing might occur on the bike with your legs depending on how muscular they are.

In all modesty, I think no further experimental validation is required on this topic! :) Good luck Adam!
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('567','Etienne Rivard','Hi, found your blog by googling around as I was asking myself the same questions. \r\n\r\nMy theory is that it is harder to keep a high heart rate on the bike simply because less muscles are involved.
Adam,

Thanks so much for the Runblogger mention - I appreciate the link greatly. I think you're at a point that I hit a few months ago where I was starting to feel overwhelmed by the on-line world. I know some who have unplugged totally because of it, but for me, the friendships and connections I have made are very real, and are what drive me to keep doing what I do (it's things like the private e-mails saying thank you for a particular post or podcast ep. that make me realize that what I publish can have a truly positive impact). I wrote a post myself a few months ago on the exact topic that this post is about - I titled it "Coping With Information Overload in the On-Line World." You can check it out here, maybe it will provide you with something useful, maybe not, but it's my take on how I manage time in this world of social media: http://www.runblogger.com/2009/11/coping-with-information-overload-in-on.html.

You can certainly make this blog whatever you want it to be, but it takes time and commitment, and requires some tradeoffs. That being said, if you're creative, it can definitely be done - for example, I record podcasts while commuting or actually out on the run, so I'm making use of time that might otherwise be wasted. As long as I remember to keep my family time first, it works out well.

Good luck with your experiment, and keep in touch!

Don't you mean *not* sharing a lane when you're talking about cycling in a narrow lane? Most people use the term "sharing a lane" to refer to when the lane is wide enough for a car to safely pass a bicyclist in the same lane. If the lane is too narrow to safely share (and there is no bike lane), I'll be near the center of the lane (as shown in the following video link) so that drivers aren't tempted to pass too close by squeezing between me and the lane line. http://tinyurl.com/rightsandduties
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('552','Brian DeSousa','Don\'t you mean *not* sharing a lane when you\'re talking about cycling in a narrow lane?
On a bike, it took a while to break the habit of getting mad to waving and smiling at the honkers, which really confuses them. Then it took a while, to change my reaction to this bad boy: http://www.twitpic.com/227e0 . . which is also a good reaction to watch.

Either way, I agree with you that the automobile is a mysterious, lethargic eco-sphere of machinery that transforms people's personality while they are in it.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('550','pete','On a bike, it took a while to break the habit of getting mad to waving and smiling at the honkers, which really confuses them.
I get up, I walk the dog, I go to work, I come home, I walk the dog, I go to bed. Any time I have two or more days off in a row, I go home (I work 484 km away from home, so I don't go "home" as in to my house every day) and spend two days indulging in my hobbies. Of course I have an advantage, because I'm a construction worker, so I don't need any exercise other than my work, and the dog is the only friend and/or family I have to worry about. So I can actually work 12s and sleep 8 hours and not have anyone complaining that I don't spend enough time on them.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('548','Mongoose','I get up, I walk the dog, I go to work, I come home, I walk the dog, I go to bed.
Kari,

Thanks for the drill. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a spare tire, but just the mental image or running cue of that will really hep! I appreciate it!

cool website -- found it as I'm thinking of a race strategy for my first marathon (Cal International in Sacramento).

Check out the Pose Method for running form... forefoot running, lean, leg lift etc. Also try a drill where you harness a light car tire behind with a rope (about 50 ft) and run for 50-100 yds. Great for helping lean the lean and land on forefoot!

Cheers.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('510','Kari Cornwell','cool website -- found it as I\'m thinking of a race strategy for my first marathon (Cal International in Sacramento).\r\n\r\nCheck out the Pose Method for running form... forefoot running, lean, leg lift etc. Also try a drill where you harness a light car tire behind with a rope (about 50 ft) and run for 50-100 yds.
Check out the Pose Method for running form… forefoot running, lean, leg lift etc. Also try a drill where you harness a light car tire behind with a rope (about 50 ft) and run for 50-100 yds. Great for helping lean the lean and land on forefoot!

I used the Cascadia's. I am definitely going to get them again once it warms back up in Spring. How do you like the Adrenalines? They look lighter, but I was doing heavyduty hiking and light rock climbing, so I went with the sturdier ones.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('508','Suzanne','I used the Cascadia\'s.
